3 Hiring Trends You Need to Know About in 2026

Whattup, job seekers! We can’t believe we’re saying this, but there are only two newsletters left in 2025. Whether you joined us recently, back in the beginning, or somewhere in between, we’re so happy you’re here.
But before we get too sappy (we’ll save that for next week), let’s look ahead to 2026. Our goal is to help place you in your dream Impact Job, but we know the hiring process, as of late, has been a wee bit depressing.
So before we tie a bow on 2025, let’s cast a hopeful vision for 2026. Keep reading for the three hiring trends that could actually help you land that dream job.

3 hiring trends for 2026 you need to know about:
Your skills will matter more than your degrees and credentials. Eighty-five percent of companies report using skills-based hiring practices, so if you got it, flaunt it! Clearly emphasize what you can do and lay out clear results. The good news is that you can think outside of your degree and use volunteer projects, side hustles, advocacy campaigns, and the like to demonstrate your skills.
AI is changing hiring, so be more human. AI and automation tools are already screening your resumes, scheduling interviews, and even evaluating you as a potential employee, and that isn’t slowing down in 2026. Companies are looking for things that AI can’t replace, like creativity, collaboration, empathy, communication, and all those other human attributes that the robots haven’t learnt yet. This can especially get you far in the social impact industry, where empathy leads the way.
Values are important on both sides of the table. Along with skills, companies have reported prioritizing values-based hiring. Finding the right fit matters more than finding the perfect candidate on paper. Job seekers say the same thing: culture and the employee experience are top priorities.
What do these trends mean for your job search in 2026? In short: show off your skills, especially the ones that demonstrate your “human edge,” like collaboration and creativity. Make your values known, and don’t be afraid to ask questions about the company culture to make sure it’s a good fit before you sign on the dotted line.
