Here’s Your End of the Year Job Search Checklist

The holidays are upon us, which means we’re about to enter that weird “circle back after the new year” period. Everyone is tired and ready to check out, so how does a job seeker survive this time? Especially when you need a new job yesterday?

We’ve got ya covered with an End of the Year Job Search Checklist. Whether you want to bust out a few more applications before the holidays or hit it hard in 2025, this list will get you started on the right foot.

Some people make Christmas lists, we do this. But we promise there’s nothing naughty about this list, it’s all nice. And yes, we checked it twice.

Here we go:

  1. Reflect on your career goals and create new ones. What did you accomplish this year that you feel proud of? What do you want to keep working toward? This will help you identify your strengths and what you bring to the table. From there, create new goals for the coming year. If you’re looking for a big career change but aren’t sure what field you want to go into yet, setting new goals will help narrow the list.

  2. Update that resume. When was the last time you polished up the ole resume? If it’s been a while, chances are it could use a refresh. You should give some attention to your portfolio, LinkedIn profile, and any other tool you use to sell yourself. You know it’s time.

  3. Check in with your contacts. The holiday season is a great time to tap into your community and do some networking. Send a few season’s greetings and casually mention that you’re looking for a new opportunity. You should also attend some holiday mixers to meet new people in your industry.

  4. Do your research. Hiring slows down at the end of the year, but it doesn’t stop. Some companies rush to fill roles before the end of the year. The slow down gives you a chance to find companies that are a great match for you rather than sending out dozens of blanket applications. Or, if you’re waiting for the new year, take this time to make a list of your dream companies.

  5. Volunteer. Okay, this isn’t technically job search related, but this is the Impact Job newsletter after all. Of course we’re gonna encourage you to use your extra time to volunteer over the holidays. And hey, volunteer opportunities are secretly great for your resume and stellar networking opportunities in this industry. You never know who you might meet!

See you back here with more job opportunities in the social impact space. Until then, get cracking on that checklist, and scroll down for end of the year job opportunities!
