Reflection Questions to Fuel Your 2026 Job Search

Whattup, job seekers! As we wind down the year, it’s time to take a good, hard look in the mirror.
As we mentioned last week, we’re officially in the thick of the “quiet quarter,” AKA the time of year when you might hear crickets from hiring managers. While this DOES NOT mean you should stop applying, it does give you a little more time to reflect on the last year and set your goals for 2026.
Whether you’re currently seeking work, just starting to consider a job switch, or want to climb the ranks at your current company, these reflection questions will help you get clear on your values, motivation, and ambitions for the next year.

First, let’s look back on what this year taught you. Ask yourself:
What work gave me energy this year, and why? What work was the most draining?
Where/how did I grow? (think about the skills you gained, special projects you worked on, etc.)
What am I most proud of?
Now, let’s get clear on what you want. Ask yourself:
What are my nonnegotiable values?
What kind of impact do I want to make in 2026?
What kind of work environment do I thrive in?
Next, let’s focus on you. Ask yourself:
What skills do I bring to the table, and what skills do I want to grow in 2026?
What feedback have I heard repeatedly from colleagues and mentors?
What’s one story from this year that best represents who I am at work?
Finally, let’s look at the year ahead. Ask yourself:
What does success look like for me in 2026?
What types of roles align with my strengths and values?
What scares me most about making a change, and what excites me most?

We recommend setting aside at least half an hour to go through these questions and answer them honestly. Bonus points if you pull out a pen and a piece of paper to write out your answers by hand.
Once you’re clear on what you want in 2026, your job search will become much more streamlined.
And if you’re ready to start applying now, we’ve streamlined the process even more for you. Scroll down for the latest and greatest Impact Jobs.
