How to Stay Visible During the Year-End Hiring Slow-Down

We can’t sugarcoat this: we’re officially knee deep in “The Quiet Quarter.” You know, the time of year when hearing back about a job application feels as realistic as Santa sliding down your chimney on Christmas Eve.
The end of the year can feel like a hiring black hole as companies close out their budgets, take time off for the holidays, plan for the new year, write up end-of-the-year reports, and do other things that sound official.
But just because it’s slow doesn’t mean you’ve been forgotten. With a few strategic moves, you can stay top of mind and end the year making a positive impression.

You can’t control hiring slowdowns, freezes, or timelines. But you can control how you approach this time of year to make sure you stay visible and keep the right mindset.
Here’s your year-end checklist:
Circle back around to your contacts. Reconnect with former colleagues and mentors before the end of the year. Send them a little note wishing them well and let them know what type of opportunities you’re looking for in the new year.
Refresh your materials. This slow season is the perfect time to spruce up your website, portfolio, and resume. Ask a trusted colleague to review your stuff and give honest feedback so that you know what kind of impression you’re making.
Update your digital footprint. When’s the last time you shared something on LinkedIn? Tons of hiring managers look there first, so this is a great time to make sure that your account is visible, relevant, and impressive.
Don’t skip the holiday parties. If you get invited to an industry holiday event, say yes. You never know who you could share a laugh with over eggnog. It’s like the perfect romcom moment, but for meeting potential new employers.
You should also use the end of the year for reflection so that you enter 2026 with the right mindset. What kind of work lit you up this year? What organizations and missions align with your values? What did you learn from the job hunt process this year that can make next year better?

Speaking of mindset, here’s another nugget of truth: just because things are typically slower at the end of the year does not mean they’re dead. Plenty of people still land their dream job in December, so don’t let the idea of a slowdown disrupt your momentum.
