How to Make a Career Shift Without Starting Over

Whattup, job seekers! This one goes out to the real ones who feel like they’re starting over with their careers. Maybe you’re switching roles, industries, or taking a complete left turn that no one saw coming. Either way, it’s easy to feel like you’re starting from scratch, and like your past experience doesn’t mean as much anymore.
Newsflash: that’s not true.
Without getting too woo-woo, we believe that everything you’ve experienced in your career so far has led you to this current moment. So let’s talk about how to merge your past with your present so you can nail your career shift without feeling like you’re back at the beginning.

How to nail a career shift:
Translate your skills: You may be in a new role, but chances are you can use some of the skills you gained in your previous role to your advantage. All you need is a little reframing. For example, a former teacher knows a thing or two about juggling multiple responsibilities, which can be helpful in a new career as a program manager.
Write your own success story: You should never feel like you have to apologize for having an “untraditional” career path. Maybe it doesn’t look like a straight line, but that doesn’t mean you can’t connect the dots. Thanks to your broad range of experience, you bring a fresh perspective that few others can offer. Brainstorm how your experience can actually be a selling point.
Start learning AI in 2025
Everyone talks about AI, but no one has the time to learn it. So, we found the easiest way to learn AI in as little time as possible: The Rundown AI.
It's a free AI newsletter that keeps you up-to-date on the latest AI news, and teaches you how to apply it in just 5 minutes a day.
Plus, complete the quiz after signing up and they’ll recommend the best AI tools, guides, and courses – tailored to your needs.
Network with intention: The bridge to a new career is often a person, not a job posting. You never know how your current network could help you land a role in your next one, so reach out to your connections and ask them if they have any connections in your new field.
Anchor your career in your core values: At the end of the day, a career in social impact is less about what you do and more about why you do it. There’s likely a values overlap between your former career and your new one. Consider how both of them supported your life and made a positive impact on the world.
With a little reflection, you can reframe your career shift from “starting over” to “starting a new chapter.” Instead of starting at the beginning, you’re building on what was already there. So turn that page and start writing, boo!

Win of the Week:
Last week at the Global Citizen Festival, financial services company MetLife announced a three-year partnership with Global Citizen, the world’s largest movement to end extreme poverty. Part of the partnership includes a $9 million commitment from MetLife to the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund.
Bummer of the Week:
Electric vehicles are about to get more expensive. The $7,500 tax credit passed by the Biden administration went away on Oct. 1 as part of the Trump administration’s broad spending and tax bill. How this will impact EV prices is still uncertain, but a major decline in sales in Q4 is anticipated.
