What Does “Success” Look Like in Social Impact

New Girl Reaction GIF

Remember on New Girl when we found out that Nick Miller actually passed the Bar exam but chose to become a bartender instead because it made him happy? That’s kinda what working in the social impact field can feel like sometimes.

We’re not saying there isn’t a ladder to climb or incredible career success to be had over here, but it might look a lil different from your peers who are on a more conventional path.

And you know what? That’s totally okay. Let’s redefine what “success” looks like when you work in social impact.

In a conventional career journey, your success is defined by your titles, promotions, and salaries. While all of those things can exist in an Impact Job, they aren’t the only way to access where you’re at in your career trajectory.

A career in social impact isn’t linear. One year, you could be in a CSR role for a big company, and the next year you could be a program manager for a grassroots organization.

To outsiders, this move may look like a backward or lateral step. But if you’re looking for a more direct connection with your community, more responsibility over projects, and stronger alignment with your personal values, this move makes complete sense.

Here’s are a few ways we’d define success in impact work:

  1. You’re making a tangible difference in the lives of others

  2. You feel proud of your work (both the process and the outcome)

  3. Your job supports your wellbeing rather than draining it

  4. You get to be part of powerful collaborations

  5. You’re growing in your skills and stretching outside your comfort zone

What does career success look like to you? The key is to remember that your success isn’t defined by your peers. YOU get to define it.

Win of the Week:

In Paris, the Seine river doubles as a cooling system. Roughly 60 miles of piping, with pumps and heat exchangers, now cools about 800 buildings in summer by drawing on the river’s naturally cool undercurrents. The system is set to more than double to 2200 buildings and reduce reliance on conventional air conditioning.

Bummer of the Week:

Jimmy Kimmel may be back on the air, but the free speech debate sparked by his removal is far from over. Keep up with the ever-changing developments and backlash at the link below.
