How to Tell When Your Job is Misaligned With Your Values

Hiya, job seekers! Last week, we outlined how to do a fall career reset, and we thought it was pretty brilliant, if we do say so ourselves. But TBH, we could only scratch the surface in a short newsletter, so this week we’re digging deeper. Put on your hard hats cause we’re about to mine for some gems.

Part of the career reset is auditing if your current career is aligned with your values or not. But how the heck do you answer that question?

Let’s talk about what it looks and feels like when you’re in a job that’s not aligned with your values, and what you can do about it. Ready?

Here are a few examples of what a career-values misalignment could feel like:

  • You’re advancing quickly, but you’re burned out and disconnected from the mission.

  • You love the cause, but you’re underpaid and under-resourced.

  • You’re proud of your role, but you’re uneasy with how your organization operates.

  • The culture silently glorifies burnout, expecting constant overwork “for the cause.”

  • Your org operates in competition with similar groups rather than building coalitions.

So now what? Get clear on your values and determine which ones are non-negotiable for you. Next, think through your career goals and which one you want to prioritize right now. For example, maybe you want to advance in your role, have more room for innovation, or need more work-life balance.

Finally, ask yourself if there’s a way to bring your values and goals into better alignment at your current job. Some compromise may be required, but you’d be surprised at the creative solutions you can find. If you want to reconnect with the mission, maybe you can champion a new project that reflects your values.

This brainstorming sesh can help you determine if you should stay put and advocate for changes at your current job, or if you’re in a true misalignment with no real solutions. If that’s the case, it may be time to move on and find a better match.

Win of the Week:

Brazil has seen a historic 65 percent drop in the area of the Amazon rainforest burned by wildfires this year compared to 2024. This improvement is attributed to a stronger, more sustained rainy season and heightened vigilance by local farmers and residents. Across the entire country, the total burned area fell by 54 percent.

Bummer of the Week:

In the US, the unemployment rate for Black workers rose to 7.5 percent in August, which is the highest it’s been since October 2021. Economists say this is a warning sign of what’s to come for the job market, as Black workers are typically the first to experience job loss.
