Want to Work in Social Impact? You Need THIS Skill

Happy Thursday, Impact Jobbers! You know that “special skills” section of your resume? The one where you fudge your proficiency with Microsoft Excel and hope it never comes back to bite you in the a$$? Yeah, that one.

In our opinion, there’s one skill that MUST be on your resume if you want to get a job in the social impact industry, and more than that, you need to actually be great at this skill. And that’s the skill of communication.

Cause newsflash, lying about being good at communication is like, really bad communication.

Here are the communication skills you need to have in spades in 2024:

  1. Written and verbal communication

  2. Active listening

  3. Persuasive communication

  4. Digital communication

Why is communication so important in the social impact industry? For starters, when you’re trying to make the world a better place, you need to get others to join your mission. You could end up working in fundraising, policy, community development, or another arena that requires you to rally people around a central message.

You could also find yourself in a position where you have to listen to others to empathize with them and offer them creative solutions. Lastly, we’re in the digital age of activism, so you gotta know what you’re doing when it comes to online communication.

If your communication skills are lacking, have no fear. You can improve them with practice and communication. Join a public speaking class, learn about digital marketing, and practice active listening in your conversations.

Trust us, mastering communication will make you more hireable and provide more job security. Wondering what else should be on your resume? Book a resume review for our expert tips today!

Win of the Week:

At MIT, a team stumbled upon a chemical reaction that could allow ships and submarines to power themselves with zero-emission hydrogen. The recipe for the reaction includes soda cans, seawater, and coffee grounds. Hydrogen is being tested as an exciting carbon-free replacement for diesel, and this discovery is a step in the right direction.

Bummer of the Week:

New data shows that hiring in the US is slowing down, and more people are holding onto their current jobs instead of quitting. Aside from a period during the pandemic, we’re currently seeing the slowest hiring pace in a decade.
