How to Make an Impact at Your Current Job

Neil Patrick Harris Make An Impact GIF by ABC Network

Whattup, job seekers! Here’s the question of the day: Can you make a bigger positive impact in the world through your career without switching jobs to do it?

Our answer: heck yes.

We know this whole newsletter is for a job board in the social impact industry, so maybe this is crazy of us to say, but you don’t have to leave your current job to make an impact. Let’s get into it.

Maybe you don’t work in the social impact space yet, and until that opportunity comes along, you still want to use your career for good.

On the other hand, maybe you do work in social impact, but your role feels far from the action, and it gets all too easy to feel detached from the mission. As someone with strong values, you want to feel like you’re making a real impact.

Whatever your reasoning is, there are tons of ways to have a positive impact from within your workplace. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Propose a new initiative: if you see a gap in your workplace, be the one to fill it. That could look like organizing a volunteer day, starting a mentorship program, or developing a green team at your office to make the workplace more sustainable.

  2. Join a committee: you don’t have to be the founder to make a difference. If your workplace already offers things like sustainability committees, wellness councils, or employee resource groups, join one and start contributing to the conversation.

  3. Leverage your role: How can your current role expand to include more impactful work? For example, if you work in operations, consider ways your company could reduce waste. If you’re in HR, champion new DEI efforts. Marketing? Share more stories about your company’s impact.

There’s no end to the ways you could make an impact at your current workplace. All you have to do is think outside the box and align your ideas with your values. Who knows, your next idea could start a company-wide movement!

Win of the Week:

In San Francisco, a waste management company is turning trash into an artist’s treasure. Recology celebrated 35 years of its artist in residence program, which allows artists to dumpster dive for materials, by opening an art gallery featuring pieces that have come from the salvaged materials.

Bummer of the Week:

American Eagle is seeing the consequences of their actions this week. Following their controversial ad featuring actress Sydney Sweeney, which was criticized for racist undertones, the retailer has experienced a nine percent drop in foot traffic.
