How to Find the Right Role in Social Impact

This one goes out to everyone who feels unsure of their next career step. You know you want to work in the social impact industry and contribute to positive change, but you don’t know how.
As the great J.R.R. Tolkien and every millennial woman on Pinterest says, “not all who wander are lost.” Chances are, there are already several clues pointing you in the direction you need to go; you just need to listen to them.
So listen up, cause we’re about to give you a step-by-step guide on how to find the perfect fit for you in the social impact industry.

Step One: Consider your values. What type of positive change do you want to see in the world? What social causes are you passionate about that you want to contribute to?
Step Two: Consider the environment you want to work in. Do you want to be hands-on with the people you’re helping, or do you want to be part of changing the larger system from behind the scenes? Think about the workplace you’d thrive in, too. Is it a grassroots org, fast-paced startup, big institution, or something else?
Step Three: Take inventory of your skills. What are you good at, either from a past role and/or from other interests and hobbies? How could you channel those skills to the cause you want to work for?
Step Four: Follow what energizes you. Think about your past jobs, projects, and interests. Which ones made you feel fired up, and which ones drained you? What about each one had that effect?
Step Five: Talk to people in roles that interest you. Ask them questions about the day-to-day reality of the job, what they love about it, and what’s difficult about it.

When you put all six steps together, you’ll be way closer to finding the right fit for you in the social impact industry. The next step is to browse job applications and see what appeals to you, and we’ve got you covered there.
