What to Do When You’re in a Career Slump

Almost everyone in the social impact industry has faced a career slump at some point in their lives. And if you haven’t, don’t worry…you will.

Wow, we’re off to a great start today, huh?

Sorry to be so doom and gloom, but it’s important to talk about the highs and lows of your professional life. Even when you love your job, the lows will come, so it’s better to feel prepared for them.

What do you do when you’re in a career slump?

The first thing you need to do is identify the root cause of the slump. Are you bored at work? Exhausted and overworked? Unfulfilled and not feeling challenged?

Get clear about what’s causing your dissatisfaction before you move to the next step: reflection. Ask yourself:

  1. When was the last time I felt energized by my work?

  2. What am I proud of from the last year?

  3. How have I made a positive impact?

These answers should provide some clarity on how you got here. But this is important: don’t rush to figure out a plan. Overhauling your career in the middle of a slump isn’t the answer. Instead, experiment with small shifts. Join a workplace initiative, volunteer outside your current role, adjust your hours if possible, pitch a new project that excites you, or develop a hobby outside of work.

Let your experiments guide you to your next step, whether that’s reinvigorating your current career or making a major pivot.

The most important thing to do during a career slump is give yourself grace. This is a season that will pass, and it may nudge you into a more fulfilling direction.
