Does Your Dream Job Exist?

If you’re part of the High School Musical generation, you probably grew up believing that all you had to do was getcha head in the game to bop to the top and land your dream job.

You know, the kind of job that you LOVE going to every day, that pays you well, offers tons of vacation days, makes the world a better place, and fills you with a sense of purpose. That dream job.

But here’s a tough question…do dream jobs actually exist?

While we believe in great jobs, we don’t buy into the idea of a dream job. At least not in the way it’s packaged to us.

The problem with chasing a dream job is that it turns career fulfillment into all-or-nothing. When you expect a job to fulfill all your emotional, financial, intellectual, and spiritual needs, it’s going to disappoint you.

Worse, you might stay at a bad job for too long because you thought it was your dream.

This is what you should look for in a job instead:

  • A job that supports your life right now

  • A workplace where you feel safe, valued, and fairly compensated

  • A role aligned with your values, with room for growth

If you ask us, that’s a dream job. It’s not your entire identity, but it’s also way better than “good enough.” It also allows room for you and your dreams to evolve over time.

Win of the Week:

After tragic flooding in the Texas Hill Country over the July 4th holiday, two Texas-based companies are leading the way in disaster relief: grocery store chain H-E-B and fast food restaurant Whataburger. Click below to learn how they’re helping Texans recover.

Bummer of the Week:

In England, junior doctors voted to strike again over low pay. After striking last year, junior doctors accepted a 22% raise. However, it was not enough to offset years of pay erosion and inflation. Today, they are still valued lower than they were in 2008.
