How to Build a Reputation in Social Impact

Hey-o, Impact Jobbers! You wanna be taken seriously in the social impact industry? We’re gonna show you how, and it’s not what you think.
Cause here’s the thing: you don’t have to wait for a fancy job title to build credibility. In fact, building credibility first will help you land that fancy title anyway.
So what do you gotta do to build a big reputation (big reputation, oooh you gonna be a big conversation, HEY)? Let’s get into it.

How to build a reputation as a leader in social impact:
Lead with your thoughts, not your resume. What do you love about being in the social impact industry? What problems do you want to help solve? What inspirational stories or lessons can you share? When you’re crafting posts, whether you’re on LinkedIn, X, Substack, or somewhere else, prioritize starting conversations. This tip goes for IRL conversations too!
Leave real comments. We can’t emphasize this enough: don’t treat online platforms/forums/groups the way dudes treat dating apps. Instead of blasting out a bunch of meaningless “cool post!” comments, take time to actually engage with your peers genuinely. You might engage with fewer people, but trust us, quality is better than quantity (who’s gonna tell the men?).
Get involved in local events. Credibility isn’t only built online. Research local groups you can get involved with, and attend regular meetings and events. After you lay the groundwork, look for leadership positions - you could volunteer to host a panel, intro a speaker, or lead a breakout session.
Host small groups. Get a few of your peers together for a monthly social impact book club or a “coffee with a cause” chat. You only need a handful of people to discuss ideas, brainstorm solutions, and build relationships.

Let’s bust a myth: you don’t have to have the loudest voice in the room to build credibility in social impact. It’s about showing up, offering your unique perspective, and making genuine community connections. When you do that, your reputation speaks for itself and makes you hella hirable (or promotable).
