Unexpected Places to Network For Your Next Job

Welcome back, Impact Jobbers! Last week, we ran our mouths about how to network online, a necessary skill in this day and age of hiring. But we don’t want to totally discount IRL networking experiences. Call us a bunch of geriatric millennials, but we still believe that people can meet the old-fashioned way!
But here’s a universal truth: most networking events suck and no one wants to go to them. Someone had to say it.
The good news? There are other ways to network for your next job. As long as you’re willing to be bold and actually connect with people in real life, you can land a lead virtually anywhere.

Networking can feel cringey as h*ck, but it doesn’t have to be that way. The best networking isn’t about awkward handshakes and trying to find a natural way to give someone your business card. The best networking revolves around making genuine connections, and that can happen anywhere.
Check out these unexpected places to network for your next job:
Volunteer opportunities - especially if you volunteer for a cause related to the career you want.
Workshops and classes - you never know who you can meet at an improv class!
Community events - farmer’s markets, open mic nights, and street fairs are great places to meet your neighbors and potential new work bestie.
Church or spiritual community - don’t rush out after the service, stay for donuts and a chat!
Your neighborhood coffee shop - create weekly rhythms and frequent the same local businesses. You’ll start to recognize other regulars to strike up conversations with.
The secret to making random, IRL networking opportunities work is to stay open and present. Get your head out of your phone and say hi to a stranger. Ask them good questions and take a genuine interest in them. Trust us, they’ll do the same to you.

The world is your networking oyster! Take a bite. (Does that metaphor work?)

Win of the Week:
Did you know your pee can fertilize crops? In London, portable toilet company Peequal is teaming up with NPK Recovery to turn the urine from London Marathon runners into enough wheat fertilizer to produce 3000 loaves of bread.
Bummer of the Week:
How are Trump’s tariffs impacting small businesses? According to advocacy group Small Business Authority, small businesses will have to raise prices, cut staff, delay growth plans, or shut down to keep up with the rising cost of imports.
