Whattup, job seekers! Last week, we reported on the rather bleak news that the pace of hiring in the US fell to its lowest since 2011. It made us sad, but it’s good to be informed, right?

However, things are now taking a turn. The March jobs report was just released, and it revealed that the US added triple the number of jobs that were expected.

Anyone else feeling a little whiplash? Let’s talk about what this means for your job search.

What the reports tell us is that we’re in a confusing hiring time, and we’re going to have to weather some ups and downs. Here’s what we’re seeing:

  • Longer hiring processes

  • Inconsistencies across industries (some are pulling back while others are making progress)

  • An uneven job market

The important thing isn’t to decode every single report or try to predict the future. Instead, you need to stay grounded in your job search and career advancement despite the mixed signals. Keep in mind:

  • Headlines are sensationalized and don’t provide a full picture of the current job market

  • People still get hired in unpredictable job markets

  • The process might take longer, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t working

Our advice to you is to focus on the things you can control, like building relationships, adding skills to your resume, and consistently applying for new opportunities.

Rather than getting caught up in the latest (and inevitably confusing) hiring news, focus on your own process. Whether that’s applying for new jobs or staying where you’re at and planting seeds for the future, you can still advance a career in social impact during chaotic times.

Win of the Week:

Microsoft agreed to purchase 626,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide removal credits over 15 years from North Star Carbon Solutions, an indigenous-owned project based in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Bummer of the Week:

Americans are already seeing the impact of the Iran war on the cost of living. Prices on fuel, steel, aluminum, natural gas, jet fuel, fertilizer, and food are predicted to get hit the hardest, and it isn’t a temporary problem. Experts predict that the worst of the consequences will be felt in two years time.
