Looking to Beef Up Your Resume? Start Volunteering

This one goes out to the job seekers with resumes that leave something to be desired. Maybe you’re at the beginning of your career, and your only job experience is the unpaid internship where you made coffee and copies for 40 hours a week.

Maybe you’re switching careers and your previous experience has nothing to do with the social impact industry. Or maybe you have plenty of work experience but you’re looking for something to make your resume stand out from the crowd.

Enter volunteer work.

Volunteer work can look great on any resume, but it’s especially fantastic for the social impact industry. Why?

  1. It shows you care about your community/the world

  2. The skills you used/gained may transfer over to the job you’re applying for

  3. You may make connections volunteering that help you land your next Impact Job

The best volunteer work for your resume is work that relates to the job you want. Let’s call this the volunteer sweet spot. For example:

  • If you want to get into marketing, find a nonprofit that doesn’t have a marketing budget and volunteer to work on their social media

  • Interested in fundraising and donor relations? Find a local fundraiser and get on their volunteer list

  • Want to work for an environmental conservation org? Volunteer at an urban garden or participate in clean-ups

  • Curious about using your tech skills for good? Volunteer to build websites for nonprofits

There are tons of ways to give back, but the most important thing is to find an opportunity you feel passionate about. It’s an added bonus that it happens to look great on your resume.

Bummer of the Week:
