Should You Work For a B Corp?

Happy Thursday, friendos. We know you’re out there scouring job sites for companies that actually make a positive impact on the world. Maybe they even treat their employees well too (what a dream, amiright?)

But how can you tell which companies actually walk the talk and which ones are blowing smoke? One way is to look for their certifications.

These days there are a bazillion certifications that companies can get to prove they’re legit do-gooders, so we’re just going to highlight a major one: the B corp certification.

The B Corp certification has been around since 2006, and it’s for socially minded for-profit organizations. For example, Patagonia is a B Corp, but the certification isn’t only for international fleece vest-producing giants. Small businesses can achieve B corp status too.

There are several reasons to work for a B Corp:

• They’re mission-driven businesses that care about more than just the bottom line

• To get certified, they have to prove that they support a healthy work environment

• They’re known for offering solid employee benefits and high starting salaries

Job applications always offer big promises, so one way to cut through the noise is to see if a company has a B Corp certification or not.
