How to Wear Multiple Hats at Work Like a Boss
Hey-o, Impact Jobbers. This week we’re continuing our series on work-life balance. If you missed last week’s email about how to avoid career burnout because you were too burnt out to open your emails, here’s the gist: you gotta stop doing so many things.
It’s all too common to wear many hats at work, especially in the social impact space. It sounds all nice and good to say, “Just do less,” but that may not be possible for you. So instead, you need to learn how to juggle all of your responsibilities and rock that multi-hat look like a boss.
Here’s how it’s done:
Get your priorities straight. Out of all of your tasks, responsibilities, and roles, which one is the most important? Which one is the most urgent? Are the urgent tasks getting in the way of the tasks that have a long-term impact? Have a brainstorming sesh with yourself to figure out your top priorities, and then…
Organize your time. Now that you know what’s most important and what’s not, plan your work days accordingly. Try a time-blocking technique like Pomodoro to help you break tasks into smaller chunks and focus on one thing at a time.
Delegate, communicate, and collaborate. You might think you can do it all, but that doesn’t mean that you have to. Communicate with your supervisor, team members, or an assistant about what you realistically can and can’t get done. If you can, delegate tasks to someone else or work with a team member to lighten your load.
Extend the timeline. Are those urgent tasks really that urgent? If you’re completely overwhelmed and can’t get everything done in time, look at your deadlines and see what can be pushed back. If that decision isn’t up to you, have a truthful conversation with your supervisor about it.
Here’s the thing, you might be able to wear several hats and rock it…but are they the right hats? Is the work you’re doing pushing you forward in your career, fueling your purpose, and making the world a better place?
