Does Working in Social Impact Make You Happier?

It’s that time of year again, friends. We know you know what we mean.
No, not April Fool’s. Not spring fever. Not Easter.
It’s the annual World Happiness Report release week. DUH.
This year’s report has some interesting findings about the connection between happiness and helping others. We’re putting two and two together over here and it makes us wonder…does working in social impact make you a happier person?

According to the report, acts of kindness can lead to more happiness than earning higher salaries. The findings apply to both giving and receiving acts of kindness. Basically, believing in the generosity of the human spirit makes you a less miserable human (who woulda thunk it!).
Actions and behaviors like volunteering, helping out strangers, and donating to worthy causes boost your personal happiness levels. Pretty sweet, right?
So what if you work for a company or org that does good in the world? In 2016, author Annie Murphy Paul argued that people working at nonprofits are happier than people working for corporations. A few years ago, a Canadian study found that working for a sustainable company makes people happier.
We know from other research that there are some crucial must-haves for people to feel happy at work. They need to feel valued, do meaningful work, have autonomy, work in a positive environment, and have growth opportunities, to name a few things.
So does working in social impact make you happier?

It depends! You can certainly find meaningful work in the social impact sector, but you could also find yourself in a terrible work environment. But when all the stars align and you work for a company that treats you well AND does good in the world, we’d say that’s a pretty solid recipe for happiness.

Win of the Week:
The South African government passed an order to ban commercial fishing across several penguin breeding spots, which will help protect the species for at least a decade. The win is a result of the tireless hard work of conservation NGOs.
Bummer of the Week:
Bubble Bee Foods, one of the biggest tuna importers in the US, is being sued by a deep sea crew who say they were physically abused and forced to work in unsafe conditions. The lawsuit accuses Bumble Bee of knowingly benefitting from forced labor and debt bondage, and other forms of abuse.
