A survival job can look like a lot of things. Maybe you get a part-time retail job, pick up some freelance work, or do some gig work in your spare time.

Whatever it looks like, there always emotional complexities that come with survival work. It’s easy to feel like you’ve failed in your job search, you’re moving backwards on your career path, or like you're stuck in place.

Here’s what you need to remember: a survival job is a strategy that can fuel your job search.

It can provide some much-needed stability and add structure to your day, two things that benefit the job search. It keeps your brain and body activ rather than losing yourself to unemployment stagnation. The money gives you some breathing room.

There’s no shame in securing a survival job; you haven’t failed, and you aren’t moving backwards. You’re simply riding out the tricky in-between time before your next win.
