How to Navigate Burnout in the Social Impact Industry

Whattup, job seekers! If you feel like you’re burning the candle at both ends at work, trying to keep your boss happy while trying to make a positive impact on the world while trying to remember why you got into this field in the first place while trying to remember to feed yourself, we’ve got some bad news: you’re on the brink of career burnout.

Career burnout can happen to anyone, especially when your job gets stressful and bleeds into your personal life. Maybe there’s tension at work, maybe you’re doing the job of three people, or maybe you just don’t feel passionate about the cause right now.

The good news is that you can do something about career burnout before you accidentally do something drastic.

Here’s our best advice for dealing with career burnout:

  • Lighten your load. A surefire formula for burnout is doing too much work and not having time for a personal life. Talk to your supervisor about taking tasks off your plate or pushing back deadlines to make your job more feasible.

  • Talk it out. See if your company offers any employee assistance programs or support services. If not, call a friend or family member who will let you vent.

  • Hit the gym. If frustration at work is spilling into your personal time and affecting your behavior, do something physical to release stress, like a kickboxing class. We aren’t telling you to imagine your boss’s face on the punching bag, but we aren’t not telling you to do that.

  • Practice self-care. We know, we know, this is the most cliche advice ever. But it’s a cliche for a reason. Taking some time to do something for yourself will have a profound impact on your mental health. Make sure you turn off your phone and are unreachable by work.

If all the burnout strategies in the world can’t fix a toxic workplace, you do have another option: get a new job. Scroll down for the best social impact job board on the internet, and then go book yourself a massage.

Win of the Week:

The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx received a $1 billion donation and announced free tuition starting this fall. The news will save students $60,000 a year in tuition expenses. The donation came from a member of the university’s board of trustees, and it’s likely the largest donation made to a medical school.

Bummer of the Week:

On February 7, an oil spill off the coasts of Tobago and Trinidad blackened the Caribbean coastlines. According to the most recent reports, the oil is still leaking and has reached the island of Bonaire, threatening sea life and disrupting the tourism industry that fuels the island’s economy.
