Do Tree-Planting Initiatives Actually Make a Positive Impact?
Let’s say you’re interviewing at a new company/non-profit/what have you, and they’re trying to prove their do-gooder credentials by showing off their “plant-a-tree” initiative.
Do you sniff out the BS, or is it A-oak-ay?
We’ve got some good news for once: a new study proves that the last 25 years of planting trees has actually made climate change less bad than it could’ve been.
Trees have long been praised for their carbon dioxide-absorbing abilities, but they also have another superpower. The study shows that trees, and specifically new forests full of trees between 20 and 40 years old, have a remarkable impact on temperature.
Essentially, planting new trees has helped keep the planet cooler than it would’ve been without them.
Did we just become tree huggers? Better question: do we kind of understand why Rory Gilmore would pay someone to give her her study tree back? Yes.
But here’s the best question: does this mean that all tree-planting initiatives are legit? …Not really.
According to the National Geographic, many of these programs lack transparency and accountability. So if a company is bragging about saving the planet, you better ask to see some proof.
