How to Improve Work-Life Balance in the Social Impact Industry
There are a ton of perks that come with working in the social impact space, but let’s be real: the work-life balance isn’t one of them.
To be clear, a perfect work-life balance is hard to achieve no matter what industry you work in. Big shout out to our productivity-obsessed society, we couldn’t achieve this level of acute stress without you boo!
But there’s something about a purpose-driven career in the social impact space that can make it a lil bit harder to really log off and enjoy your downtime. Well, our dear Impact Jobbers, let us introduce you to something called work-life balance.
Here’s how to create a bit of space between your life and your job:
Set a hard log-off time. This one is especially challenging if you work from home and don’t have a commute to help you transition from work mode to life mode. But no matter where you work, you should have a hard stop time that you won’t work past. Go for a walk, hit the gym, or make your favorite dinner to help you put a period on the workday.
Break up the work day by going out for lunch or scheduling a catch-up call with a friend.
Actually use all of your vacation and sick days, you workaholic.
Take up a hobby that has nothing to do with work. Even better if it comes with a time commitment, like a weeknight softball league or a weekly improv class, so that you can’t work through that time.
If you’re really struggling to find time for yourself outside of work because you have too much work to do, schedule a sit-down with your direct supervisor to talk it through. If they’re overloading you with work, it’s time to reconfigure your responsibilities.
If your company is making it difficult to have a life outside of work, maybe it’s time to work for a company that prioritizes balance, health, and flexibility. Scroll down to start applying for a new social impact job, and then book a vacation pronto.
The world needs ya at your best, and the best way to get there might just be spending a week on the beach sipping drinks with tiny umbrellas in them. That’s balance, babe.

Bummer of the Week:
The ride-share and delivery industries are the latest to face employee strikes over unfair wages. Drivers for Lyft, Uber, and Deliveroo in the United Kingdom report working 80 hours a week to make ends meet. They’re represented by the campaign group Justice for App Workers.
