The Invisible Toll of Long-Term Unemployment

Giphy
Welcome back, job seekers! Last week, we had a fun little chat about long-term unemployment and how, unfortunately, it’s becoming more and more common.
Ready to have some more fun? Today, we’re talking about what happens when you’ve been looking for a job for more than six months. There’s the obvious stuff, like the financial stress, but there’s also an invisible toll to long-term unemployment.
Call us Dora the Explorer cause we’re pulling out our flashlight to shine a light on the topic. Sounds like a party, right? Let’s get into it.

The invisible impact of being unemployed for more than six months:
Emotional toll: You may experience increased anxiety about the future, shame, self-blame, grief, and diminished confidence.
Mental toll: Constantly applying for jobs and interviewing can cause decision fatigue, difficulty with focus, overthinking, rumination, and a lack of imagination to dream about the future.
Physical toll: You may deal with chronic fatigue, trouble sleeping, stress-related pain like headaches, changes in appetite, and lower energy than usual.
Social toll: The challenges of unemployment may lead to withdrawing from your social life, avoiding conversations about what’s next, and saying no to hangouts to save money. Plus, you lose your professional community.
Self-Worth toll: You probably feel untethered, exhausted from facing constant rejection or ghosting, and left behind by your peers.
Existential toll: And finally, you’re questioning if your work means anything, and what this is all worth. You probably feel a bit disconnected from the values that got you into social impact in the first place.
Long-term unemployment sounds like a barrel of fun, no?

Win of the Week:
In the UK, an 18-year-old launched TheWage.Org, a marketplace that connects volunteers, charities, institutions, and companies to make social impact more effective. The platform addresses barriers by providing a framework for posting defined projects and matching them with motivated contributors.
Bummer of the Week:
The Alabama Solution, a documentary that chronicles extreme, life-threatening abuse in the Alabama prison system, is up for an Oscar (that part is good news). The bad news is that no real prison reform has yet to take place, and inmates who participated in the doc continue to be punished.
