What Your Career Burnout is Trying to Tell You

Whattup, job seekers! Last week, we hammered home a very important lesson: career burnout is not a personal failure.
Now that that truth nugget is in your brain, we can move on to the next step: what is your burnout telling you?
This is when we turn symptoms into information, and information into an action plan. Buckle up, besties, we’re getting to the bottom of your burnout conundrum today.

Here’s what your burnout symptoms could be telling you:
Constant exhaustion → your capacity is overloaded, either in your workload, pace, or emotional life. It’s not about getting enough rest; it’s about reducing the pressure.
Numbness, cynicism, or detachment → your values are compromised or overused. You feel powerless over outcomes or no longer mesh with the mission. Emotionally, you’ve been carrying too much for too long, and numbness is your nervous system’s way of protecting you.
Anxiety and constant urgency → you don’t feel safe. This is usually due to unclear expectations, regular last-minute requests, lack of support, and fear of making mistakes. If everything feels urgent, your body never has a chance to calm down.
Brain fog and decision fatigue → you’re juggling too many responsibilities, wearing too many hats without enough boundaries, and there could be a lack of prioritization from leadership. It’s not a lack of discipline; it’s cognitive overload.
Resentment or irritability → your boundaries are being crossed, and you’re expected to go above and beyond your scope of work at all times. You might be carrying more responsibility without the authority to match.
